WHY THE REFUGEE CRISIS NEEDS YOU
WHY THE REFUGEE CRISIS NEEDS YOU
The number of displaced people in the world surged from just 64 million in 2017 to 110.5 million in 2023. The World has become a much more dangerous place and an increasing number of people are seeking a place of safety where they can rebuild their lives.
The number of refugee claimants arriving in Canada has increased by 54% over pre-pandemic levels, hitting 144,035 in 2023. As a result, Matthew House has been running at 156% of capacity and had to seek alternate shelter for 218 refugees last year.
UNHCR and the Canadian Council for Refugees only expect these numbers to increase.
As a multi-cultural community right on the border, Windsor-Essex receives a signficant number of Refugee claimants annually but a lack of refugee-specific shelters leaves many vulnerable to homelessness and exploitation.
