Each year, hundreds of men, women, and children arrive in Windsor-Essex seeking safety and a fresh start. Unfortunately, many struggle to find shelter

and the settlement support they need to quickly become

self-sufficient. With the opening of Matthew House "Chapel" an additional 100 (or more) of these vulnerable refugees will find HOPE, HOME, and FAMILY.


Each of these welcomes begins with YOU! Your donation to the 100 Welcomes Campaign will help provide the furniture and appliances needed to outfit the space, as well the staffing to support at least 100 refugees during the first year.


Donations made during April, May, and June will be matched, dollar for dollar (up to $50,000) by one of our corporate partners!

A HEALING Environment

Matthew House "Chapel" is located in a family neighbourhood on a fully landscaped lot. It backs onto a city park with a playground, walking trails, and a baseball diamond. It is also just one kilometer from Malden Park and connected to Windsor's cycling routes.

Large WELCOMING Rooms

Matthew House "Chapel" will provide an additional eleven bedrooms for newly arrived refugee claimants and their families. All the rooms are carpeted, spacious, and welcoming. With the larger rooms, Matthew House will be able to accommodate even the largest of families.

CLEAN and Open Common Areas

The common areas at Matthew House "Chapel" are clean, bright, and open. There is ample space for children to play, adults to gather, and partners to provide support services. The facility was also built and renovated with high usage in mind, so it will stand up to the  wear and tear of heavy use.

WHY EXPAND NOW?

The number of displaced people in the world surged from just 64 million in 2017 to 103.5 million in 2022. The World has become a much more dangerous place and an increasing number of people are seeking a place of safety where they can rebuild their lives.

The number of refugee claimants arriving in Canada has increased by 44% over pre-pandemic levels, hitting 91,935 in 2022. As a result, Matthew House has been running at 112% of capacity and had to seek alternate shelter for 149 refugees last year.

 

UNHCR and the Canadian Council for Refugees only expect these numbers to increase.

As a multi-cultural community right on the border, Windsor-Essex receives a signficant number of Refugee claimants annually, but a lack of refugee claimant-specific services leave many vulnerable to homelessness and exploitation.
